Weekly Message - September 29 - October 3
We were fortunate to have perfect conditions for our Terry Fox Run today and it was heartwarming to see all of our students running through the community for such a good cause! It is turning out to be such a beautiful autumn; the colours of the leaves are amazing and the warm weather has been wonderful.
Here are some important updates and celebrations from our school community this week.
Terry Fox Community Run – A Record-Breaking Year!
We are incredibly proud to share that Captain Nichola Goddard School has raised over $13,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation, our highest total ever and more than double our original goal!
The Terry Fox Foundation has recognized our school as the fifth-highest fundraising school in the region (Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut) and the thirty-fifth in the entire nation. To put that into context, there are over 2,200 schools in Alberta alone so to achieve these numbers is truly outstanding.
This is such an extraordinary achievement, and it speaks to the dedication and spirit of our staff, students, and families. A special thank you goes to our organizing committee — Ms. Connolley, Mr. Adams, Mr. Hellwig, and Mr. Miller — for their leadership in making this event such a success.
We could not be prouder of our school community for carrying forward Terry’s legacy of hope, courage, and perseverance.
Short Week Ahead
We have three days of classes next week:
- Monday, Sept. 29 – Non-instructional Day. Teachers will be working on IPP updates, examining learning data from 2024–25, and planning for English as an Additional Language (EAL) supports.
 - Tuesday, Sept. 30 – School closed in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
 - Wednesday, Oct. 1 – Classes resume.
 - Friday, Oct. 3 – Orange Shirt Day at CNGS. Students wear orange shirts to recognize Truth and Reconciliation.

Supporting Child and Youth Well-Being
The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join a live online series on supporting child and youth well-being. The series is hosted by the Recovery Alberta Community Education Service (CES) Program in collaboration with local experts from the Calgary community.
This year's sessions will explore a wide range of timely topics, including: Social media and gaming, cyber safety, vaping, psychoeducational assessments, mental health and youth, ADHD, executive functioning and more.
The series is designed to provide families with knowledge, tools, and strategies to help navigate the challenges and opportunities of raising children and teens today. Details are available on the Child and Youth Family and Caregiver Series page.
Athletics – Fall Highlights
The first month of school is ending, and things are well underway with extra-curricular activities. Our soccer players and cross-country runners have earned praise from other schools for their outstanding sportsmanship. We are fortunate to have such amazing students at Captain Nichola Goddard and look forward to more strong representation in the basketball season.
Soccer Season – Fan Expectations
We are always so pleased when students attend games and cheer on our teams. It is important to remember fans must stay on the opposite side of the field as the teams. Also, fans must sit at least 2 meters back from the sideline and if you are choosing to stand, please be sure you are not standing in front of our parent guests.
Basketball Season – Fan Expectations
With basketball games beginning this week, we want to remind everyone of our fan guidelines:
- Home games are open to CNGS students and parents. Visiting fans must be accompanied by an adult and remain with that adult.
 - CNGS students are expected to leave the school when our teams are not playing, allowing visiting spectators to watch their teams.
 - Students should act as gracious hosts and offer seats to our guests.
 - CNGS students may only attend away games with a supervising adult.

E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety
We’ve noticed more students riding e-bikes and e-scooters to school this year. A few key reminders:
- Helmets are required by law for all riders under 18 on bicycles and are strongly recommended for e-scooters due to the speeds involved.
 - Students are responsible for locking their bikes and scooters securely.
 - Bikes and scooters cannot be ridden on school grounds during the day.

Noon Supervision (Grade 6)
Grade 6 students who stay at school for lunch must be registered for noon supervision. Fees will be added to MyCBE on or after Oct. 14. Registration is available through MyCBE. Families who only need occasional lunchroom use may pay a $5/day drop-in fee.
Cross Country 2025 Season
Congratulations to our cross-country team of over 50 athletes, coached by Mr. Hunter, Ms. McCormack, Mr. Miller, Ms. Ing, and Mrs. Osicki! After three races with nearly 1,000 athletes from 36 schools across North Calgary, CNGS finished 10th overall. Thank you, runners, for representing us so well!
Winter Activity Day – Dec. 4, 2025
Save the date! Our annual Winter Activity Day will be held Thursday, Dec. 4. More details will come home in October, but we are thrilled that our School Council is generously covering bussing for all trips. This lowers costs for families and provides three free hiking options for students.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in making CNGS a strong and caring school community.
