It looks like another beautiful weekend is coming, and hopefully city crews can resolve the water emergency! As you are likely aware, schools will continue to be open and operating during this time and contingency plans are in place should water restrictions increase. Updates and important information regarding the water shortage will be posted on the CBE website to keep you informed.
June is always a busy time in the school year and this year is no different. We have a lot going on as students and teachers cover the remaining outcomes from the various Programs of Study. Our grade 6 and 9 students will be writing Provincial Achievement Tests from June 12-20. Details on specific tests can be found in The Week Ahead information below.
Please note, the last week of classes this year is a four-day week (June 24-27). Classes are dismissed at 12:10pm on Thursday, June 27. Appeals day will be held on June 28 so there are no classes on that date.
In addition, we are hosting our grade 9 farewell on June 25. The ceremony will run from 6:30-7:30pm followed by a dinner and other activities for the students ending at 9:00pm. Students should arrive at 5:15pm for instructions, photos and procession organization. Doors will be open at 6:00pm for families to find seats in the gymnasium.
Next Year Information
Our 2024-25 school calendar should receive final approval and dates will be posted on our website calendar very soon. We will not be publishing a printable calendar for the coming school year; all information will be maintained on the school website calendar.
The first day of classes will be Thursday, August 29, 2024. All students will begin at 8:05am. Meeting locations will be posted the week of August 26 and staff will be positioned outside the main doors and throughout the school.
We will be hosting a Meet the Teacher evening on September 11 that will coincide with our first school council meeting of the year.
Music Program
CBE instrument rentals are due back June 10, 2024. Please make sure to do a thorough cleaning of your instrument and case before returning it to the school. Students will also do a thorough cleaning of their mouthpieces with Sterisol spray in the music classroom in the coming days.
Any Long & McQuade or St. John’s rentals must be returned to the store by the families renting them, no later than June 30, 2024. If you have any questions, please ask Ms. Ahenda.
Summer instrument rentals will be processed following this inventory; if your child is interested in renting an instrument for summer, please see Ms. Ahenda before June 10, 2024.
Athletics
On June 4, a brave group of super humans headed to the Thermopylae obstacle course race. These students ran a 5km race that included 20 obstacles and 2 mud pits demonstrating incredible feats of strength and determination by all. Way to go Phoenix!
On Friday, June 7 (just as this update goes live on the website) our amazing football athletes are competing against other schools from throughout the city, and we are confident they will be exceptional ambassadors for our school. The location for the game was changed to New Brighton Athletic Park due to the emergency flooding and closure of Hellard Field. Emails were sent to families of our football players with the new location
Track and Field Meet
All track athletes need to sign into the Track and Field team Google classroom. This is where they can see information about the track meet, including if the weather is questionable on Monday and/or cancelled. The code for this classroom is zkz7mwx. The track meet will occur this Monday, June 10 at Foothills Athletic Park.
Athletes must arrive by 6:45am at CNG for attendance and then board the bus at 7:10am. We cannot wait for late athletes.
The track meet will run from 8:30am-4:30pm outside. Athletes need to have their athletic wear (including a Phoenix shirt so everyone can identify which students belong to which school) and shoes. Students need to have food for the entire day, plenty of water, warm clothes, clothes to protect from sun/rain, sunscreen, bug spray. Optional items that students may want to bring include an umbrella, blanket, hat, something to do (cards, book, something quiet and easy to work on in the stands).
Parents are welcome to come watch; there is a schedule of events attached to the letter all athletes received. If a family wants to take their child after all their events are done, we need to ensure each child is checked out with a CNG teacher in the stands. All track athletes must be picked up from Foothills Athletic Park.
