Weekly Message - September 8-12
A very exciting first week at Captain Nichola Goddard School has ended and we are already building up to a variety of Terry Fox activities culminating in our annual run throughout the neighborhood on Friday, Sept. 26. If you are around on that morning and see a large crowd of adolescents running through the community, stop and wave!
Picture Day, Meet the Teacher, and our first School Council meeting are also coming up in the next few weeks.
Entry to the School
The school is accessible to students at 7:50am every day and we are asking all students to enter the building through the front door. Any students who are participating in activities before school such as athletics or band rehearsals will be let into the building prior to the start of their activity.
Casino Fundraiser
Did you know that when school communities volunteer at a Casino, it raises around $70,000 to help the School Council and Parent Association provide valuable resources and enhancements to each student's learning? In previous years, the money has been used to purchase online subscriptions, pay for busing for field trips to help keep costs to parents down and many more enhancements. Last year we purchased a new stage, lighting and sound system to be used for assemblies, presentations and school performances.
Our next Casino is Thursday Dec. 11 and Friday Dec. 12 at Ace Casino Airport, 40 Aero Cres. NE. Thank you everyone who has signed up already. We have many positions that need to be filled, including some key positions, which must be filled by the last week in September.
There is no prior experience required for any of the positions, and all training will be conducted during your shift. If every family volunteered for 1 spot, we would have no problem filling all our committed positions. If you can help support this important fundraiser by volunteering, please use this link to sign up.
Meet the Teacher & School Council
Our Meet the Teacher evening will take place from 6:30-7:30pm, this Tuesday, September 9. This will be an informal drop-in event, and we will post locations of teaching teams along with maps of the school in the front foyer of the school that evening. Please join us for a chance to meet your child’s teachers, and the informal structure will let you be in contact with multiple grades if you have more than one child attending our school.
We will also be hosting our first school council meeting for the school year on the following day, Wednesday, September 10. Please join us in the Learning Commons. School Council is a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents from our community and be involved in supporting your child’s school.
Like most schools, we are always looking for more parents to help us on council. We are currently trying to fill a variety of roles on both the council and the parent association (the financial side of council operations). We are looking for parents to volunteer as a recording secretary for both groups as well as a vice chair for the parent association. If you are interested in helping out, we would love to chat with you. We meet 8 times a year and the work is shared with a group of very supportive parents.
Terry Fox Run 2025
On September 26, CNG will be having our 13th annual Terry Fox event, and this one will include a whole school assembly and all our students out running on the course again together!
Students are in a fundraising drive and can buy ballots for the chance to win a homeroom prize from our staff. Grade teams are building prize baskets filled with a variety of items. By purchasing a ballot, students are contributing to our whole school goal of $5000 for cancer research but also putting their name forward to win a fantastic prize. Money will go to the Terry Fox Foundation and a winner will be drawn for each prize to be announced at our assembly! Students can purchase ballots at lunch all week ($2 for 1 ballot or $5 for 3 ballots) for the prize(s) of their choice!
Photo Day is coming Sept. 16
Picture day is coming soon! Lifetouch will be at our school on Tuesday, Sept. 16, to take student photos. We have also scheduled the retake day in October so any students who are absent on the 17th will be able to have their picture taken on Oct. 23.
Phoenix Spirit Wear
Phoenix Spirit Wear is available once again through our online store for a limited time.
Wearing your Phoenix gear is a wonderful way to show your school pride and look good while you’re at it!
Please browse the store and get your orders in soon; the store will close at midnight on Sept 14!
Phys Ed Attire
Please take a moment to check in with your child about their footwear for PE. To keep students safe and comfortable while being active, we ask that they wear running shoes or other athletic footwear. Crocs, sandals, and boots aren’t a good match for PE activities, as they can increase the risk of slips, sore joints, or injuries.
Students in grades 7–9 are expected to change their clothing for PE. Wearing comfortable clothes for activity not only makes it easier to move but also helps keep regular school clothes clean, especially when our field is muddy or when activities get messy.
We’ve noticed in this first week that many students feel better after changing into fresh clothes following PE. A quick change makes a big difference for comfort, confidence, and readiness to learn in their classroom classes.
We also have our school store open if they’d like to pick up some CNG gear!
