Weekly Message - February 3-7

CNGREADS

The CNGReads Book Club is up and running. Participants are reading the selected books. Any reader who reads all 20 books will be entered to win a $100 gift card of their choice. Members just need to read 5 books out of the 20 selected to be able to vote for their favourite book. The book that wins the most votes will be awarded “The Phoenix”. If you would like your child to participate, the club is running until the end of April. Please encourage your child to stop by the Learning Commons to pick up a permission form. Voting will be taking place during the first two weeks of May.

Stop! Drop and Read

The CNGReads Book Club is running a “Stop! Drop and Read! Event” for the month of February. All grades and subjects will be participating. Students are encouraged to always carry a book or magazine with them, as they will never know when the call will be made.

Traffic Safety

There has been a recent increase in unsafe driving practices before and after school including parents dropping students off in the school parking lot, students jaywalking, double parking, and U-turns. Student safety is jeopardized by these practices so please consider slowing down and dropping students off in a safe location away from the front of the school. This will help you avoid the congestion that occurs each school day and keeps all students safe.

Healthy Hunger Fun Lunch – Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Each week, the School Council offers Healthy Hunger as an easy way to order special lunches. Please register and order on the Healthy Hunger website. This opportunity is an important fundraising activity for the school and gives students a chance to enjoy a variety of lunch options throughout the school year.

School Calendar for 2025-26 is now available

The 2025-26 school calendar has been finalized and posted.

The first day of school for students is Tuesday, Sept 2, and the calendar includes a minimum of 181 instructional days and 10 system-wide days for schools to schedule parent-teacher conferences, professional development, and other organizational days.

Please visit the system calendar page for more information.

High School Transfer Process

High School Transfer Process

The high school transfer process will open on February 10 for grade nine families considering programs or courses not offered at the designated high school. Information about the process along with timelines can be found on the CBE website.

The online registration system will limit the viewable transfer options to only those that are Open or Limited status for the purpose of accepting transfers. Exceptions to this rule are the programs of choice: Performing and Visual Arts (PVA), High Performance Athlete Development (HPAD) and International Baccalaureate (IB).

Phoenix Fan Policy

Reminder to all our CNG fans that we need to be positive representatives of our school at games. Cheering for our teams shows support and excellent school community. It is not acceptable to ever cheer against the visiting team or make negative comments about them, as this displays poor character and unsportsmanlike behavior. All the athletes competing are students doing their best to represent their school and making others feel unwelcome will not be tolerated. Please also be considerate of the families that have come to watch and how your actions and words are affecting people who don’t necessarily know you.

Like CNG, other schools have visiting fan policies. No one should be travelling to another school to watch unless they have an adult with them the entire time. Our athletes sign paperwork that allows them to be there with their coach but other CNG students cannot be unsupervised at other schools.

Valentine’s Candygrams

The grade 8 leadership class will be selling Valentine’s candygrams for $2. This is a great way for students to send a message and a treat to a friend or classmate! They will be sold in the foyer during lunch on Wednesday, February 5th and Thursday, February 6th. Students need to know the full name and homeroom of the person they are sending it to. Candygrams will be delivered on February 12th.
