Weekly Message - February 23-27
We have another short but busy week at Captain Nichola Goddard School. This Friday is a non-instruction day, so there are no classes for students.
Pink Shirt Day – Feb. 25
Pink Shirt Day originated in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2007 when two high school aged students saw another student was not being treated with kindness and respect. “[They] organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied [for wearing a pink shirt]…[They] took a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school. It all began when a group of teens went to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out a message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag. As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. The bullies were never heard from again.” — Globe & Mail
That one act of compassion quickly spread beyond the school and in 2008, British Columbia’s provincial government proclaimed a provincial Anti-Bullying Day in February. Over time the idea of wearing pink to stand against bullying spread throughout Canada and then internationally. Today, Pink Shirt Day is observed annually in Canada on the last Wednesday of February.
Pink Shirt Day is now a national and global movement that encourages people of all ages to wear pink as a visible symbol of support for kindness, inclusion, and respect for others.
We encourage our students to wear pink because they want to, not because they are told to. As a school we honour the grassroots act of kindness and demonstrate our commitment to reducing bullying and creating welcoming, caring, safe and respectful spaces for everyone.
School Council Meeting
We have a school council meeting scheduled for this Wednesday evening at 6:30pm. All parents/guardians are welcome, so please join us if you can attend.
Next Year Planning – 2025-26 School Year
The CBE continues to experience significant increases in enrollment, and Captain Nichola Goddard will continue to be designated as a Closed status school.
Closed status means a school is at or exceeding the utilization rate and has reached student capacity. Closed status schools cannot accept transfers from students living outside the designated attendance area. Students who reside within the community of Panorama Hills continue to be admitted to the school. If you reside outside of Panorama Hills, you can determine your designated school using the CBE’s Find A School tool on the main website.
2026-27 Class Assignments and Requests
Each year we work to create class groups that support each student’s learning.
We try to create class cohorts that support each student’s learning. If you have a request for your child’s class next year that has an educational basis, it will be considered. We welcome parent input as part of the process in developing class lists but the final decision rests with the school.
We have created an online form to track any parent requests. Please use the link to complete the form and provide information.
Additionally, if you are planning to move or transfer your child to a different school for the 2026-2027 school year, please contact the office at (403) 817-3300. Informing us of your plans will facilitate the smoothest transition possible.
Child-care (noon supervision) tax receipts
The grade six noon supervision program can be claimed on income tax returns. Child-care (noon supervision) tax receipts for 2025 are currently available on MyCBE.
