Weekly Message - September 28-October 2
Fall officially arrived this week on Monday, Sept. 21, and it is turning out to be such a beautiful autumn; the colours of the leaves are amazing and the warm weather has been wonderful.
Here are some important updates and celebrations from our school community this week.
Terry Fox Community Run – Another Record-Breaking Year!
We are incredibly proud to share that Captain Nichola Goddard School has raised over $22,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation, our highest total ever and almost doubles our original goal!
The Terry Fox Foundation has recognized our school as the third-highest fundraising school in the region (Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut) and the seventh in the entire nation.
This is an extraordinary achievement, and it speaks to the dedication and spirit of our staff, students, and families. A special thank you goes to our organizing committee — Ms. Connolley, Mr. Adams, Mr. Hellwig, and Mr. Miller — for their leadership in making this event such a success.
We could not be prouder of our school community for carrying forward Terry’s legacy of hope, courage, and perseverance.
Short Week Ahead
We have four days of classes next week:
- Monday, Sept. 28 – Tuesday, Sept. 29 – Regular classes.
- Wednesday, Sept. 30 – School closed in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
- Thursday, Oct. 1 – Friday, Oct. 2 – Regular classes
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day Event
Captain Nichola Goddard School will mark Orange Shirt Day through a number of key learning opportunities. As a school community, we acknowledge and support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, and we commit to connecting Indigenous perspectives in all areas of learning to build understanding, empathy and mutual respect. Students learn this through land-based learning and exploring what it means to be Treaty people.
We are encouraging students to mark this important work by wearing orange shirts on Friday, Oct. 2nd. We are committed to building a community where each student feels safe, welcome, valued, respected, and cared for every day. Updates from School Council and Parent Association
Please note: Our October meeting has changed to Wednesday, October 21st at 6:30pm in the Learning Commons. All parents/guardians are welcome.Looking for Volunteers: Bylaw Review Committee - We need your help, especially if you have experience in nonprofit society bylaws or if you are interested in helping our association stay current. This will be a short-term commitment, likely meeting 2-3 times this year. If you can help or want more info, please contact parentassoc.cngs@gmail.com.
Athletics – Fall Highlights
The first month of school is ending, and things are well underway with extra-curricular activities. Our soccer players and cross-country runners have earned praise from other schools for their outstanding sportsmanship. We are fortunate to have such amazing students at Captain Nichola Goddard and look forward to more strong representation in the basketball season.
Soccer Season – Fan Expectations
We are always so pleased when students attend games and cheer on our teams. It is important to remember fans must stay on the opposite side of the field as the teams. Also, fans must sit at least 2 meters back from the sideline and if you are choosing to stand, please be sure you are not standing in front of our parent guests.
Basketball Season – Fan Expectations
With basketball games beginning next week, we want to remind everyone of our fan guidelines:
- Home games are open to CNGS students and parents. Visiting fans must be accompanied by an adult and remain with that adult.
- CNGS students are expected to leave the school when our teams are not playing, allowing visiting spectators to watch their teams.
- Students should act as gracious hosts and offer seats to our guests.
- CNGS students may only attend away games with a supervising adult.
Cross Country 2026 Season
Congratulations to our cross-country team of over 50 athletes, coached by Ms. Ing, Mr. Hunter, Ms. McCormack, Mr. Miller, and Mrs. Osicki. After three races with nearly 1,100 athletes from 36 schools across North Calgary, CNGS finished 10th overall. Thank you, runners, for representing us so well!
E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety
We’ve noticed more students riding e-bikes and e-scooters to school this year. A few key reminders:
- Helmets are required by law for all riders under 18 on bicycles and are strongly recommended for e-scooters due to the speeds involved.
- Students are responsible for locking their bikes and scooters securely.
- Bikes and scooters cannot be ridden on school grounds during the day.
Noon Supervision (Grade 6)
Grade 6 students who stay at school for lunch must be registered for noon supervision. Fees will be added to MyCBE on or after Oct. 14. Registration is available through MyCBE. Families who only need occasional lunchroom use may pay a $5/day drop-in fee.
Fun Lunch 2026-27
Fun lunches are open to order through the Healthy Hunger website!
The School Council is excited to continue this fundraiser, which makes it easy to order special lunches while raising money for the school. A portion of each lunch purchased comes back to the Council to support school needs. Lunch will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Currently, lunches are set up until November in Healthy Hunger, with more to be added as the year goes on. To participate simply register for an account (it only takes a few minutes). Once set up, you can log in anytime throughout the year to place orders. Please note: the cut-off for orders is five days before the lunch date. We rely on volunteers to keep this program running. Shifts are just 1–1.5 hours on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and you don’t need to commit every week. If you are able to help, please sign up for the dates you are available.

Winter Activity Day – Dec. 3, 2026
Save the date! Our annual Winter Activity Day will be held Thursday, Dec. 3. More details will come home in October, but we are thrilled that our School Council is generously covering bussing for all trips. This lowers costs for families and provides three free hiking options for students.
