School Council – Annual General Meeting
The AGM for our school council will be held next month on Tuesday, April 9th at 6:30pm in the Learning Commons.
Last week you received a message from our School Council Chairperson, Pat Wiebe. The AGM is the meeting where new council members are elected. Every school faces the same challenges with recruiting council members. Our school is extremely lucky to have a dedicated group of parents who have been working hard to support the school. The council provides invaluable support to various events and activities throughout the school year. For example, weekly fun lunches wouldn’t happen without the council and volunteers organizing and serving the orders. Field trips throughout the year are supported by financial contributions to pay for busing. A variety of purchases are made to support classrooms including laptop carts, art equipment, sports equipment, and learning software subscriptions.
Each year, as students move on to high school, their parents go with them, and this year is no exception. We know that next year we will be looking for more parental support as key council members move on. The time commitment for council members is not too great; we meet eight times a year and all work is shared by a team to lighten the load.
If you are interested in supporting your child as a member of school council please reach out to Pat Wiebe, Council Chair, at cngscouncilchair@gmail.com
Music Program
Our students in grade 9 Band had the opportunity to go to Band Camp with the grade 8/9 Concert Band from Georges P Vanier School. We spent 2 days and 1 night at Camp Horizon and the students got to rehearse with a guest conductor, hone their skills on their instruments, and do lots of community building with outdoor games. This trip would not have been possible without the help of the School Council, so huge thanks to them!
Healthy Hunger Fun Lunch – Tuesdays & Wednesdays
Each week, the School Council offers Healthy Hunger as an easy way to order special lunches. Please register and order on the Healthy Hunger website. This opportunity is an important fundraising activity for the school and gives students a chance to enjoy a variety of lunch options throughout the school year.
Athletics Update
A huge congratulations to our volleyball teams this winter. With massive improvements in all 4 teams, a couple tournament champions and even the jr girls team playing in the finals our athletes have developed as individuals and grown so much as teams!
With our volleyball season ending this week, we are excited to announce that badminton will quickly follow! Tryouts for badminton will happen in the week that follows spring break. The first week will all be after school tryouts: April 2 for senior (grade 9), April 3 for intermediate (grade 8), April 4 for junior (grade 7) and junior varsity (grade 6) on the following Monday April 8th. All athletes need to ensure their green form is handed into the PE office prior to tryout. These teams will be very competitive to make, so it is important students show responsibility and be prepared for the first tryout.
There will be an open gym for badminton hosted by Mr Tea next week for students to come to work on their own game. This is NOT a tryout and is open to all students regardless of whether or not they wish to try out for the team after spring break. The doors will open for students at 6:45am on their assigned grade day listed below.
