Weekly Message - Sept 25-29 | Orange Shirt Day, Council & Casino Volunteers
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Meet the Teacher last Wednesday. It was nice to say ‘hello’ and reconnect at the beginning of this school year. This week we have a four day school week due to the closure of schools in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The school will be closed on Friday, September 29, and reopen on Monday, October 2.
Invite | National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day Event - Sept. 30
CBE students, staff and their families and friends are invited to join an event being hosted by the City of Calgary in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District. The third annual ceremonial opening is taking place on Sept. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Fort Calgary (750 9th Ave SE). This year's gathering will include a smudge tent, in-person Indigenous speakers and performers, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The events will also include an intertribal dance demonstration featuring Indigenous students from the CBE and CCSD. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.
Following the YYC, CBE & CCSD event, all are invited to join the Pokaiks – The Children Commemorative Annual Walk and Gathering 2023. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. at City Hall (15-minute walk from Fort Calgary or 2-minute drive) and continue to Shaw Millenium Park (30-minute walk). The walk will be followed by drumming/dancing, Indigenous community speakers, artisan booths, and food sales.
Captain Nichola Goddard School will mark Orange Shirt Day on September 28th. Please consider encouraging your child to wear an orange shirt on this day. It is important that this day is more than just about wearing an orange shirt. It’s about honouring victims and survivors of residential schools, about making right on past mistakes, and it’s about being kind, caring and compassionate human beings.
Captain Nichola Goddard School acknowledges and supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, and we commit to connecting Indigenous perspectives in all areas of learning to build understanding, empathy and mutual respect. Students learn this through land-based learning and exploring what it means to be Treaty people. We are committed to building a community where each student feels safe, welcome, valued, respected, and cared for every day. Please take a moment to reflect on the importance of this day with your child. More information on Orange Shirt Day can be found here: www.orangeshirtday.org
School Council – Vice Chair & Key Communicator needed
Captain Nichola Goddard School Council is looking for a parent who would be willing to fill the Vice Chair and/or Key Communicator positions for the 2023-2024 school year.
The Vice Chair works beside the Chairperson to organize council meetings and carry out business as required. The Vice Chair also runs the council meetings if the Chairperson is unable to attend. There are eight council meetings each year and the overall commitment is minimal.
The Key Communicator is the person who represents our Council attending the Community of School Councils meeting put on by the Calgary Board of Education and the Board of Trustees. Meetings are online and take place every couple of months, approximately 4 times a year. These meetings are a wonderful way for you and your council to find out what is happening within the Calgary Board of Education. After the meetings you will give a brief summary of what was presented by the CBE Board of Trustees at the next CNGS Council meeting.
Another role of the Key Communicator is to be an administrator/moderator of the Facebook page Parents of CNGS Students. If you are interested, please email Council Chair Pat Wiebe at cngscouncilchair@gmail.com
Casino Volunteers Needed
The Casino is coming soon. We have been assigned a casino on Monday, November 27 and Tuesday, November 28, 2023. We are short a few volunteers. If you are able to volunteer your time, please consider signing up for one of the remaining positions. If we don't fill all the positions, we are in danger of losing the casino and the substantial amount we raise for the two-day period. All of the funds raised help to enhance our children's education.
Our previous casino raised over $70,000.00. All funds raised went to benefit our children in the following ways; Sporting Programs, Investment in Technology, Artists in Residence, Whole School Performances, Music, Learning Commons Resources, Educational Support and Donations.
Please follow this link to sign up.
We appreciate your support! Thank You from the School Council and Parent Association
