Weekly Message - Sept 4-8 | Sports Tryouts, Terry Fox Run, Volunteering, Healthy Hunger
Well, the school year is off to a great start! Students were so excited to meet their teachers and classmates on Thursday and Friday. We finished off the week with assemblies and that was such a positive way to bring everyone together and celebrate.
We are holding a welcome back pancake breakfast for all of our students this Friday morning. The breakfast is sponsored by your School Council and the food is being prepared and served by volunteers from the Lions Club.
This year is going to be amazing and the positive energy in the building this week is a sign of great things.
Extra-curricular sports are starting off this week with basketball, soccer, and cross-country running all beginning their training.

Entry Times & Lunch Breaks
There are some changes to our schedule and organization this year to address the high enrolment numbers. New for this year is the requirement for all students to enter the building through the main doors each morning. The doors open at 7:50am for student entry
The other significant change is the creation of two separate lunch breaks; one for grades 6 & 7 and the other for grades 8 & 9. As our school enrolment approaches 1,000 students, we are working to ease congestion and crowding in the hallways during break times. Please see our schedule on the Contact Us page of our website for specific times.
Healthy Hunger
We are hoping to offer Healthy Hunger again this year. We will be discussing how to operate this service at the school council meeting on September 12. Healthy Hunger is organized by the school council and is a great volunteer opportunity for parents who are interested in coming into school and supporting us. We wouldn’t be able to offer this service without the support of parents and are hopeful that we’ll be able to continue this year.
School Council Meetings
The Captain Nichola Goddard School Council and Parent Association will be having the first meeting of the 2023-24 school year on Tuesday, September 12.  We will meet at 6:30pm in the Learning Commons and everyone is welcome!
We meet throughout the year on Tuesdays at 6:30pm on the following dates: Sept. 12, Oct. 17, Nov. 21, Jan. 16, Mar. 5, Apr. 9 and May 21. Dates are subject to change if a conflict with other school events arises. Please join us to learn more about the school and how you can get involved in supporting our students.
Volunteers
We welcome volunteers in the classroom, on field trips and with certain tasks at school. The majority of our activities or field trips would not be possible without the active participation of our volunteers.
Prospective volunteers must first register as a volunteer at the school office. You must also complete the annual CBE volunteer registration form.
By completing the form, you agree to abide by the conditions that protect the safety, confidentiality and working environment of our school. You also make a signed declaration regarding criminal charges. Follow this link to complete the annual volunteer registration form and return to the school office with photo ID.
In addition, an electronic Police Information Check (ePIC) must be completed:
Applicants will need to process their PIC including a Vulnerable Sector Check within 180 days of completing their Annual Volunteer Registration. Failure to do so will require the volunteer applicant to re-apply.
PICs are valid for five years from date of issue.
Applicants must have lived in Canada for at least a year and be a resident of Calgary with a Calgary address in order to use the ePIC system.
NEW - changes to the Calgary Police Service (CPS) ePIC system in June 2023 now requires volunteers to cover the costs of their own Police Information Check ($21.25 total)
Volunteers who reside outside Calgary must obtain a PIC, including a Vulnerable Sector Check, from the RCMP or police agency in the jurisdiction where they live. This must be submitted to your school.
NEW - CPS only sends clearance letters directly to the applicant.  Once an applicant recieves their letter from CPS, online access to their clearance letter is granted for only 60 days.  After the 60-day period they would need to reapply.
Sports Teams
We are already jumping right into the tryouts for soccer and basketball as well as practices for cross-country running this week. Specific dates and times will be provided to students by the PE department and team coaches. Basketball tryouts will be happening next week. Future weekly messages will include specific dates and times for each team. Students wishing to try out for teams need to have their athletic form signed and handed in before attending tryouts and this form is available in the PE office.
